Question: Dr. Jason Fond what advice do you have for athletes to help prevent injury?
Dr. Fond: I always recommend sports specific training. Basketball players should focus on flexibility of the leg muscles. Skiers may benefit from quadricep and hamstring strengthening and balance. Runners can prevent injury by strengthening aerobic endurance. Athletes need to get in shape to play sports rather than play sports to get in shape.
Question: Dr. Fond what advice to you impart to high school athletes to help give them longevity in their sport
Dr. Fond: It’s important for young athletes to perform sport specific training. Many high school athletes participate in their sports at a very high level, 7 days a week. Due to the high intensity of the competition and training, injuries can frequently occur. Therefore, I attempt to educate athletes and their parents on the specific training that is vital to prevent injuries and perform at a high level. For example, I try to educate patients that core strengthening as well as focusing on flexibility can be very important in the prevention of injuries.
Question: Dr. Fond what advice to give to older athletes to help keep them in the sport they love
Dr. Jason Fond - As we get older it’s important to focus on injury prevention. Patients need to focus on flexibility and strengthening prior to participating in sports. As we age, our muscles, tendons and cartilage become more susceptible to injury.
